Three reasons for the placement of fuel tanks in the wing are described below. The design concepts behind modern fuel tanks are interesting and do not require an engineering degree to understand. Locating the fuel tanks in the aircraft’s wings improves the overall structural efficiency by counter-balancing the wing’s lift and the fuselage’s weight, reduces aircraft fuel system complexity, and improves passenger safety by locating fuel away from the passenger compartment. ![]() Why are the fuel tanks located in aircraft wings? ![]() While high level consideration may attribute this to space concerns, there are actually some very intentional structural and safety considerations leading to this design. Two types of materials, Fuzzy Wall and Tough Wall, are shown to have demonstrated good crash resistant characteristics.Whether you are a seasoned, new, or aspiring pilot, you likely have noticed that aircraft fuel tanks are commonly located in the wings instead of the main body or fuselage of aircraft. Evaluation of the test data indicates that additional analysis is needed in order to understand fully why certain materials function as excellent tank materials and others do not. Results indicate that fuel tanks can be built today that are capable of preventing fluid spillage during accidents involving decelerative loading above the human survival range. Experiments were conducted with fuel tank material specimens and with experimental fuel tanks subjected to actual aircraft crashes. A discussion of the factors which must be considered when establishing specifications that will result in a crashworthy fuel tank is presented. Accident investigation reveals that fuel tanks developed to current crash resistant fuel tank specifications fail even under relatively moderate crash conditions. ![]() Several methods are available to reduce this hazard however, the simplest and most effective immediate method is through control of the fuel spillage.
